Tanks a lot

It has been a while since we showed you a mysterious road sign, so how about this one, spotted on the German border by Adrian Smith at EatonSmiths Solicitors. Let’s hope that if you take this road, you do not get stuck behind a slow tank on its way to a neighbouring country.

Hi,
Thought you might like to know (!) that it is actually a 'bridge classification plate' which displays the maximum vehicle weight permitted, by vehicle type and whether one- or two-way traffic. So, in this example, the bridge is classified for use by tracked vehicles up to 70 tonnes and for wheeled vehicles (tank transporter carrying a tank...) up to 90 tonnes, in both directions at the same time. An older, non-autobahn bridge might have a rating of 40 tonnes one-way for a tracked vehicle, hence the politeness apparent in our tank commanders - "no no, after you, Charles - I insist"!
